New Socks

I was at Target with Bronwen on Monday, looking for more bits of her Halloween costume when I found this treasure! Okay, Bronwen actually found the monkey slipper-socks, but I chose these for her, and she loves them. Whenever she sees frogs, she crouches down, springs up and says, "Hoppy! Hoppy!"

She normally doens't look like this--and she didn't this morning, either--stupid flash.Early in the morning, and she heads straight for her books. That's my girl!

My Pumpkin

We had a great afternoon yesterday. T.J. came home and suggested we go to the pumpkin patch which is right up the road from our house. I thought it was a fantastic idea.

Just al little reminder of what a difference a year can make:
Bronwen was so happy in the pumpkin patch. She kept running around from one flat of pumpkins to the next, exploring and inspecting along the way.
Here she spotted a scarecrow, and instead of checking him out...she decided to arrange the pumpkins on his tree stump.
She had a minute to two to give an Eskimo kiss to her daddy:
And play in the hay with me. She just didn't want to sit on the bales. Oh no--instead she wanted to move them, handful by handful.
There were some odd pumpkins there--bumpy and lumpy, and Bronwen enjoyed checking them out.
We didn't bring this one home, although it obviously wanted to be part of the family.
Bronwen actually picked out a couple of little pumpkins which we did bring home. She had a great time placing them in the yard, then on the sidewalk. It was when she started throwing them that we took them inside and placed them safely on the mantle. Perhaps she will work on decorating them today!

Busy Weekend

Just some pics of some of my Halloween decorations:

Baker's rack village, and the bats to work, just in seizure-inducing mode:
Dining room table:Saturday began early. TJ and I got up before the sun and actually awakened our Bronwen (first parenting rule: never wake a sleeping baby if you can help it!), so we could head downtown for a health assessment. Basically this means they give flu shots, draw some blood, get your weight, BMI, blood pressure, etc. After the nurses groaned at TJ's low body fat percentage, and I dropped the pregnancy excuse as much as humanely possible, we headed over to the market area for breakfast.

After eating and watching 3 old people play the dulcimers (for which Bronwen clapped enthusiastically), we headed over to the campus of LSU to participate the the Alzheimer's walk/run. TJ and Bronwen were there to run in the 5 k.

I, on the other hand, participated in walking the 5k. Here Bronwen recreates my walking position, including my patented "arm pump," and my "pass me and suffer" glare:

Afterwards, we ate some jambalaya and enjoyed the sunshine. Bronwen refused to wear a hair clip, so her curls were a bit out of control. Even TJ had one or two of his own escaping from his hat.Bronwen was so excited to meet the Keebler Elf, and she blew him lots of kisses. I think he was taken with her, as he blew some right back her way.
We visited the children's village area where TJ and Bronwen tried to blow some bubbles. Sadly the wands were defunct, so no bubbles ever appeared, despite Bronwen's expert bubble blowing technique.
Finally we returned home to eat lunch and play in the yard. Bronwen enjoys the cats' squirt bottle, and I made a foolhardy error in showing her how to squirt it. Yes, water water everywhere! Bronwen really loves the kitty on her shirt. Thank goodness Mimi and Aunt Jana keep her stylish during this spooky season!

Nod to Aunt Jana

I will upload pictures from our busy weekend, but first, I will give to you a glimpse of our morning's activities.

Rice Krispy Treats

I am appalled that it has been a week since my last post. Where has the time gone? I suppose Bronwen and I have been too busy enjoying cooler weather and not spending enough time inside on the computer.

We decided that we needed a treat the other day, so Bronwen made some Rice Krispy treats with my assistance. I did the work; she got to lick the spoon.

At first she wasn't sure what she was tasting:
Bronwen likes it!
Blurry, but she really likes it!
Close up pic of "Krispy" face:
And finally, on a completely unrelated note, as we were outside frolicking, we found this little guy on the shutters. I had a penny and tried to hold it up next to him to show he was the same size, but he hopped off--Lincoln is pretty scary looking, all coppered up!

Autumn Activities

Today started cool and crisp, finally feeling somewhat like fall. Bronwen and I were excited, and we decided to walk around the neighborhood. As we were strolling, Bronwen came up with the fantastic idea of going to buy gourds, pumpkins, and mums at the store. Maybe I was the one who had the idea, but she quickly seconded the motion.

We went to the outdoor market and found some lovely squash and then to Home Depot for some mums. Bronwen helped pick out everything, and even offered to carry the pumpkin--sadly she couldn't because it weighs more than she does.

We arrived home and promptly went to work planting the new flowers and arranging the produce. Bronwen used her garden tools to help move dirt, but I did all the actual planting. It took me a little time to convince Bronwen the new mums weren't weeds--she thought they didn't belong and tried valiantly to pull them out with her bare hands. Thankfully, I helped her to see they added something pretty to the garden.

Here Bronwen wipes dirt from her hands after a long morning's labor.
Yet she still has time to wave to the neighbors as they drive into the neighborhood.Bronwen supervises my planting, making sure she likes the arrangement.
After we went inside, we were hot and sweaty from being in the sun, so I took off Bronwen's shirt and she helped me make my sandwich for lunch (she is holding my cheese in her hand). The past two days have been tough--she hasn't been eating well. Lunch time is basically whatever I can get her to eat, and sometimes it might just be some grapes and Life cereal. Today I made a game of it, which Bronwen thought was great. I got her to eat ham!

T.J. arrived home and took Bronwen for a run. She actually took this picture of him. Not too bad!
She was so proud of all the work she did!

Art Time

Bronwen knows the sounds of many animals now, but to get her to play the game with me on camera has been fruitless. She will usually "meow" for me, and then she'll start to say "No!" She knows I want her to say more, and she won't play my silly game. :-( The funny part is that if she watches the video later, she'll make all the sounds for me quite willingly. Seems she is enjoying her own little game at my expense.

Child Labor

Aunt Jan thinks that we, specifically I, involve my child in hard labor on a daily basis. Just because she loves her Swiffer duster and enjoys washing walls, she thinks I am forcing her against her will to participate in chores. Can I help it that she enjoys it?

Actually, the truth is that Bronwen is the task master in the family. Saturday we were outside, and the next thing we knew she was weeding the front beds. She walked over to a weed, plucked it, walked across the sidewalk and put it in the grass. She never went for the flowers. T.J. was amazed and began to help her. Before we knew it, the entire bed was weed free!

Then Sunday, she was scooping dirt from her bucket onto the patio, and I told T.J. he should put sand in it--we periodically sweep sand over the patio to fill in the cracks. So he did--and then he just poured a pile on the brick. Bronwen had a blast playing in the sand, and we all helped sweep it into the patio when we were finished. **Disclaimer: Pardon the "hot pants" she is wearing--I just left the diaper cover from her church dress on; it seemed like it would be nice and cool for the warm afternoon.

Neither of these tasks would have been done this weekend had it not been for our industrious and motivated child. She even figured out how to combine the two!

What a great kid!

The Secret is Out

The secret being that I am pregnant of course. My discerning, observant readers have long ago noted my new pregnancy ticker across the top of my blog, but if you haven't been paying attention, now you can check it out as well.

I am having another bundle of joy in April, and no, I'm not going to find out whether it is a boy or girl. I can wait. I think.

As a result, TJ and I decided it was time to add to the family--besides the baby, we have purchased a new vehicle. I introduce to you, world, our new minivan. It is a 2006 Toyota Sienna, and I actually am quite pleased with the color. I was trepidatious at first about transitioning from a small, get-wherever-you-want-to-go Jetta to the official mom-mobile of suburban America, but honestly, I love it. It is fun to drive, and I am ready to embrace the fact that while a dozen clowns may fit in the back of a Volkswagen, two car seats, sadly, cannot. As an added bonus, it will be much more comfy for our 12-hour trek to North Carolina for Thanksgiving, thank you lumbar supports (for T.J.) and a DVD player in the back!

LA Book Fair

Bronwen attended the Louisiana book fair for the second year in a row. While we didn't see any characters from her favorite stories this year, we did manage to play in the flowers, buy some books, and enjoy the day in the grass under a tree. I put some side-by-side pics of Bronwen from last year. She has changed so much!

Thank You Mimi

Bronwen loves her new chair that Mimi brought to her all the way from NC. The following is an excerpt from an actual event that took place. Names and places may have been changed or omitted to protect the innocent.

One day a mom--we'll call her "Penny"--was walking through the living room. She spied a tiny person in a tiny chair. She caught the cute little girl by surprise. After this little munchkin recovered from the startling appearance of an adult, she quickly flashed an angry scowl to frighten the mom away.
"Penny" was not fooled for a moment by this faux display of aggression and asked the little tyke what she was reading in her nifty chair. The little girl kindly showed her the Halloween story she had just before been perusing.
The mom was so proud of her little bibliophile that she decided to leave her be, which made the little girl happy indeed.
I just realized you can see the nasty scrape she got falling out of the Corona chair (see post). My friend Melanie heard it happen, as I was on the phone with her at the time. Her arm landed on the bricks by the basil. My brave little warrior cried for 5 seconds--more because she got scared falling out of the chair. I don't think she ever realized she got hurt!
